A small workshop light should put useful light on the task without tipping, creating hard glare, or requiring a battery system you do not own. Lumens alone do not describe beam spread, shadows, color, stability or runtime.
One verified compact example
RYOBI identifies the PCL660B as an 18V ONE+ LED light with 280 lumens, up to 500 feet of beam distance and a 130-degree pivoting head. It is sold as a bare tool and uses the RYOBI 18V ONE+ battery platform.
Those specifications make it a documented narrow-beam utility light, especially for someone who already owns the battery. They do not establish that it is the best bench-flood light, color-matching light or room-lighting substitute.
We have not measured output, runtime or beam quality. The Amazon button is an exact-model search; confirm the model and included items.
Beam shape matters more than the headline
A long beam can help inspect a crawlspace or the far side of a garage, but a wide flood is usually easier for a bench, paint touch-up, plumbing cabinet or assembly task. A bright hotspot aimed at glossy work can increase glare and hide detail around it.
Before buying, decide whether the light needs to:
- flood a bench or small room;
- throw a narrow beam into a cavity;
- stand on the floor;
- hang from a hook;
- attach magnetically to steel;
- sit below a cabinet;
- run from a battery platform or an outlet.
Set it up safely
Place the light where it cannot fall into moving tools, water or a walking path. Keep it clear of flammable liquids and follow the temperature and moisture limits in the manual. Do not improvise a mount that can release overhead.
Battery lights avoid a trailing cord but add charging and pack-storage duties. Corded lights can run continuously but require cord routing and a suitable outlet. If the light shares a battery with tools already in the workshop, check that using it will not leave the job without a charged pack.
For finish matching or electrical inspection, use lighting specified for that work rather than assuming any bright LED provides accurate color or safe task visibility.
