The Honeywell TP50AWKN is one exact basement dehumidifier to compare when price matters, but an “under $200” title cannot promise today’s selling price. Verify the live offer only after its current DOE capacity, drain arrangement and operating limits match the space.

This assessment uses Honeywell’s TP-series manual. It does not rank unverified retailer listings or reuse legacy pint classes as current capacity.

Read the exact suffix and current rating

Honeywell groups several TP models in one manual. Similar names can represent different capacity, pump or connectivity configurations. Match the full TP50AWKN suffix on the appliance, listing and manual; do not infer features from another TP model.

Dehumidifier test standards have changed, so old and current pint figures are not interchangeable. Use the capacity printed for the current DOE test method in the manufacturer documentation. Size also depends on measured humidity, temperature, room separation and continuing moisture entry.

The larger TP70AWKN shows why. Honeywell’s page says it removes up to 50 pints per day, yet lists 70 pints as its “2019 DOE Standard” figure, while a footnote on the same page says the 2019 test procedure gives lower ratings than the old one. Confirm the current-DOE figure on the unit’s label before comparing it with the TP50AWKN. The page lists a continuous-drain outlet and included hose but no drain pump, and a $400 to $450 price band when checked on October 3, 2026, well above this page’s budget.

Repair water entry first

Portable dehumidification is for airborne moisture after bulk-water sources are controlled. Foundation seepage, plumbing leaks, wet carpet or standing water need direct repair and drying. A larger machine does not make an unresolved leak acceptable.

Place an independent hygrometer in the basement and log conditions before and after operation. If humidity does not fall despite correct placement and maintenance, reassess the water source, room division and equipment capacity.

Choose a workable condensate plan

For gravity drainage, the hose must fall continuously to an approved drain and remain secured. A hose that rises, kinks or crosses a walkway is not a reliable setup. Without a safe drain route, the bucket must be accessible enough to empty before the unit stops, or a pump-equipped model should be considered.

Keep the intake and outlet clear, seat the bucket correctly and clean the filter as the manual directs. Use the required grounded outlet and follow the manual’s temperature and electrical limits.

Price check comes last

After confirming model, current capacity and drainage, compare the live price and warranty. If the TP50AWKN is above the target budget, do not substitute a similar-looking model without repeating those checks.
