Sherwin-Williams Duration Exterior Acrylic Latex is an exterior coating offered in multiple bases and sheens. Its product data sets substrate, preparation, application and weather limits; the “paint and primer” label does not eliminate repairs or dedicated primer where the system calls for one.

Identify the siding and old coating
Wood, fiber cement, masonry and vinyl have different preparation and color restrictions. Determine the substrate and whether the existing layer is sound, chalking, peeling, glossy or unknown. On older homes, disturbing paint may require lead-safe practices.
Wash by a method permitted for the siding and allow the surface to dry to the product requirements. Scrape loose coating, feather edges, repair rot and failed joints, and correct flashing or moisture entry before painting. Coating over damp or decayed material hides the condition rather than repairing it.
Build a compatible coating system
Read the current Duration data sheet with the primer and caulk instructions. Bare areas, stains, corrosion and difficult existing finishes may need a dedicated compatible primer. Test adhesion when the old coating is uncertain.
Choose sheen for the actual surface condition and maintenance plan. Higher sheen can make uneven repairs more visible, while a flatter finish does not excuse poor preparation. Vinyl siding may have color-selection restrictions because heat absorption can distort panels; follow the current manufacturer guidance.
Schedule the weather window
Use the published air and surface temperature, humidity and rain-free limits. Shade, wind and wall temperature can differ from the forecast. Plan enough time for cleaning, drying, repairs and recoating rather than treating application day as the whole project.
Buying decision
Choose Duration only after the siding, primer need, sheen and quantity are established. Hire a qualified contractor for unsafe upper-story access, widespread coating failure, rot or unresolved water entry.
