Water around the indoor AC unit can involve a blocked condensate drain, a damaged pan, a disconnected pipe or melting coil ice. A dry outdoor drain outlet alone does not prove a clog: first establish which pipe it is and whether the system was producing condensate.

If water is overflowing or approaching electrical equipment, stop cooling using a safely accessible normal control and call for service. Do not stand in water to reach a switch or open the equipment. Never bypass a float switch to keep cooling running.

Separate the observations

What you can see from a safe position Why it matters Useful service question
Water in a secondary pan An overflow route or equipment leak needs investigation Where did the water enter this pan?
A wet pipe joint or disconnected line Water may escape before reaching the intended outlet Does the full drainage route need repair?
Ice on a visible line, followed by water Thawing can produce water without a simple drain-only fault Has the icing cause been checked?
A condensate pump is present This is not solely a gravity-drain system Are the pump, discharge and safety control working?

Keep the observations separate. “There is water beside the air handler” is useful; “the drain is definitely clogged” may send the repair in the wrong direction.

Avoid turning a drainage problem into damage

Do not pour household drain opener, bleach or another cleaner into an unidentified HVAC pipe. Do not apply compressed air or force a tool through the line without instructions for that installation. Traps, joints, pumps and safety devices vary.

Carrier’s maintenance guidance recommends a technician when condensate-clog symptoms appear. It describes checking the pan, clearing the line and testing flow; a successful repair therefore needs more than emptying visible water. Ask how the route was checked and how the technician confirmed drainage afterward.

What to photograph and keep

Record the first wet location, equipment model, visible drain routing and whether the system stopped itself. Photograph only from accessible floor level. Include any recent filter, coil, pump or drain work in the service history. If a ceiling below an attic unit is bulging or wet, keep people away and obtain urgent help rather than entering an unsafe attic.

After repair, ask for the maintenance method and interval appropriate to the installed system. Do not assume a cleaning recipe from another house applies to yours. Monitor the previously wet location during ordinary use without opening equipment or overriding controls.

For the related cooling fault, see AC coil icing and airflow clues . If the display also went dark, note that fact for the technician before assuming the thermostat itself needs replacement .

If water appears after the indoor coil thaws, compare the signs of an iced air conditioner .
