A balancing kit can help an otherwise correctly installed ceiling fan, but it cannot make a loose mounting box or damaged bracket safe. Stop the fan if its canopy moves against the ceiling, the support appears loose, a blade is damaged or the motion is worsening.
Start with the support, with power off
Follow the manufacturer’s isolation instructions before approaching the blades. Use stable access equipment and wait for the fan to stop completely. Do not hold a blade to slow it or inspect the assembly while it runs.
Look for visible movement at the ceiling, missing hardware and obvious blade damage. A box intended only for a light fixture is not automatically suitable for supporting a ceiling fan. If you cannot establish that the support and installation are appropriate, have them inspected before further operation.
Compare the blades rather than guessing at weights
Once secure installation is established, check the following in the sequence given by the fan’s manual:
| Observation | Appropriate next step |
|---|---|
| Dust buildup differs across blades | Clean all blades consistently without bending them |
| Blade or blade-arm screws are loose | Tighten only the specified hardware as directed |
| A blade is cracked, warped or the wrong replacement | Obtain the correct part; do not hide damage with weights |
| Wobble remains with sound, correctly fitted parts | Follow the supplied balancing-kit procedure |
Do not bend blade arms by eye, attach arbitrary heavy objects or assume all blades from the same brand are interchangeable. Keep track of any changes so that you can undo an unsuccessful balancing adjustment rather than accumulating weights.
Check the result from a safe distance
Restore operation only when the fan is fully assembled and the area is clear. Observe it from the floor. If a manual calls for testing different speeds during balancing, follow that process without reaching toward a moving blade. Stop again if the mounting itself moves or there is new noise or visible damage.
For a fan that also flickers or loses power, the electrical symptom needs separate attention; balancing does not address it. Record the model and whether symptoms began after installation, cleaning or replacement of a part.
A fan light that also flickers needs the separate light-flicker checks ; blade balancing does not repair its electrical supply.
