A humming doorbell transformer is not enough evidence to order a replacement. The doorbell, transformer, chime and any required power accessory must work together. A transformer that powered a conventional button may not meet the requirements of a newly installed video doorbell.
Do not assume that a transformer is safe because the doorbell uses low voltage. Its supply side connects to household mains electricity. Leave enclosure opening, supply wiring and replacement to a suitably qualified person.
Match the complete system
Find the exact doorbell model and its current installation instructions. Record the existing chime model and any power kit or bypass accessory. Read transformer labels only where they are visible without removing covers or approaching unsafe wiring.
| Detail to compare | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| Specified supply type and voltage range | Similar-looking doorbells can have different requirements |
| Transformer capacity | Voltage alone does not establish that the supply is adequate |
| Chime compatibility | An unsuitable chime or configuration can affect operation |
| Required accessory | Some installations need a specific power kit or wiring arrangement |
| Number of connected devices | An existing shared supply may serve more than one load |
Do not buy a larger transformer solely because a forum recommends one. The manufacturer’s permitted specifications and the actual installation must agree.
Use recent changes as clues
Note whether the hum began after fitting a video doorbell, changing a chime, restoring power or doing other electrical work. Also record resets, failed button presses, poor charging or app-reported power warnings. A recording made from a safe distance can help explain the sound without repeatedly operating the system.
If there is a burning smell, visible heat damage, smoke or sparking, stop treating the issue as an acoustic nuisance and seek urgent assistance. Do not cover the transformer with insulation or enclose it in padding to quiet it. That does not resolve an electrical or installation problem.
Source and repair decision
Ring’s Wired Doorbell Plus power troubleshooting , checked September 19, 2026, is a model-specific example of matching power and wiring requirements. Use the documentation for your own model, not its values by analogy. Ask the installer to confirm compatibility and the source of the noise before replacing components.
