Longer drying time is a reason to check a vented dryer’s lint collection and exhaust path, not simply run hotter or repeat cycles. A clean lint screen does not establish that the duct beyond it is clear. Ventless dryers have different maintenance systems, so identify the appliance type first.

Stop using a dryer that produces smoke, a burning smell or unusual overheating. If fire is suspected, leave the area and call emergency services. Do not keep operating it while deciding whether the smell is normal.

Start with accessible maintenance

Clean the lint filter as directed for the dryer and check for damage or poor seating. Once the appliance is off and cool, look at the accessible transition duct without pulling on a gas connection or straining the power cord. A crushed section behind the machine can restrict flow even when the visible outlet looks clear.

From a safe ground-level position, inspect the exterior termination for visible obstruction and damage. Do not climb onto a roof or reach into a moving exhaust assembly for a quick check. If the termination is inaccessible, arrange suitable service.

Observation Follow-up
Drying slowed after the machine was moved Inspect for a crushed or displaced transition connection
Exterior outlet is obstructed Have the obstruction removed and the route checked
Lint appears around a disconnected joint Restore the approved exhaust connection, not just room cleaning
Problem persists after filter care Investigate the complete duct and appliance performance

Check the route, not a universal length rule

Permitted exhaust length depends on the dryer, duct arrangement and bends. Use the installation manual rather than a generic maximum. The duct material and termination must also meet the appliance instructions and applicable requirements. Do not vent a conventional dryer into the attic or room, or improvise an indoor lint-catching container.

A long or concealed route may need professional cleaning and inspection. Ask whether the service checks the whole path, reconnects it correctly and verifies operation afterward.

Keep a useful record

Note the model, route, last cleaning date and any change in ordinary drying performance. Maintenance frequency depends on use and the installation; an annual reminder is not permission to ignore a developing restriction. Do not leave a suspect dryer running unattended.
