Water inside an exterior light is a reason to stop using the affected fixture until the entry path and electrical condition have been assessed. Do not touch wet electrical parts, remove a lamp while wet or assume that an outdoor label makes the assembly waterproof.

If there is smoke, arcing or immediate danger, keep clear and get emergency assistance. Arrange safe isolation and inspection rather than repeatedly resetting a protective device that trips during rain.

Check the location rating first

Outdoor fixtures can have different exposure ratings. A damp-location fixture is not the same as one rated for direct rain. A porch that appears sheltered in fair weather may still receive wind-driven rain.

Find the model number from purchase records or a safely accessible external label and compare the installation location with its manual. Do not dismantle a wet fixture to look for the label. Kichler’s outdoor guidance distinguishes damp-rated sheltered applications from wet-rated exposed locations; the exact fixture instructions determine permitted use.

Record where the water appears

Observation from a safe position Question for the installer
Water follows the wall behind the mounting plate Is the wall penetration or flashing directing water inward?
Moisture is inside the lens or globe Are the correct seals, fasteners and orientation present?
The problem began after lamp replacement Was a gasket displaced or a closure fitted incorrectly?
The fixture is corroded or cracked Is replacement necessary rather than another surface seal?

Take photographs before an inspection if this can be done without contact. Note whether the issue follows all rain, only wind from one direction or a recent cleaning.

Why more caulk is not always the repair

Do not seal every opening indiscriminately. Some assemblies need specific drainage paths, and caulking them can retain water. Likewise, drilling an improvised drain hole can damage the fixture or invalidate its protection. The specified mounting, seals and drainage detail should be restored together.

A dry-looking exterior after the rain does not establish that internal electrical parts are safe. Ask the electrician to assess damage as well as the building-side leak. Keep the model and repair record so a recurring problem can be traced rather than repeatedly resealed.

For nearby outdoor receptacles, check protection while a plug is connected separately from the light fitting.
