A range hood’s grease filter needs the cleaning method specified for its actual material and design. A washable metal filter is not the same as a replaceable charcoal filter used in some recirculating installations. Identify the hood model and filter type before soaking or placing anything in a dishwasher.

Turn the cooking appliance and hood off, allow them to cool and follow the hood’s power-isolation instructions. Protect the surface below and support the filter as you release its latch. Avoid leaning on hot or fragile cooktop parts.

Identify what can be cleaned

Filter or component What to confirm
Metal mesh Approved cleaner, washing method and drying instructions
Baffle filter Removal orientation and any separate grease collection parts
Charcoal media Whether the model calls for replacement rather than washing
Filter indicator Whether it needs resetting after completed maintenance

Do not assume all metal filters are dishwasher-safe. Some products permit it; others require different care. Aggressive alkaline cleaners, abrasives or an unsuitable wash cycle can damage finishes or media. The manual’s directions take precedence over a general degreasing recipe.

Clean and refit completely

Remove accumulated grease using the approved method and clean accessible surrounding surfaces without spraying liquid into the motor or electrical controls. Do not mix cleaning chemicals. Check the filter for damaged mesh, distorted frames or broken retaining parts.

Dry and refit it as instructed, making sure it is secure and correctly oriented. A loosely installed filter can rattle or allow air around the intended path. Do not operate the hood indefinitely with a filter missing because the airflow seems stronger.

If extraction is still poor

A clean filter cannot correct a blocked exterior termination, unsuitable duct route, failed blower or installation configured for the wrong ventilation mode. Recirculating and externally vented hoods also manage air differently. If the problem remains, record the model, operating mode and symptoms for service rather than adding extra filter layers.

Choose future maintenance timing from the manual and actual cooking use. Visible buildup or reduced performance can justify attention before a calendar reminder. Keep a record of the filter part number so replacement does not depend on approximate dimensions alone.

For an over-the-range microwave, identify its grease and charcoal filter arrangement before removing a grille.
