The short answer

“Baldwin smart lock” is a product-family phrase, not a verified model. Baldwin currently documents Touchscreen deadbolts in standalone and Z-Wave versions and a separate Baldwin x Level electronic lock. Its Evolved smart-lock line is discontinued. These products do not share one app, connection method, door fit, or support path.

This page therefore does not name a universal Baldwin winner. Start with the model number and installation sheet.

Current product map

Baldwin product Connection and control Identity check
Touchscreen standalone Keypad electronic deadbolt without smart-home connectivity Model number lacks the Z-Wave configuration
Touchscreen Z-Wave Connects through a compatible Z-Wave hub or controller Exact model includes the connected configuration
Baldwin x Level Separate Level-based platform with model-specific Bluetooth, hub, or Matter/Thread requirements Confirm the SKU and required Level accessory or platform
Baldwin Evolved Discontinued product with legacy support Do not substitute it for a current Touchscreen or Level model

Baldwin explicitly says not every Touchscreen deadbolt has Z-Wave and that connectivity cannot be added to the standalone version. A generic retailer title that says “smart” is not enough.

What to verify on the door

Measure the door and existing preparation before selecting trim. Baldwin’s electronic-lock FAQ gives model-specific limits. The Baldwin x Level system, for example, is described for a 1-3/4-inch door with a 2-1/8-inch bore and a standard tubular deadbolt; it is not presented as compatible with mortise, multipoint, or interlocking systems. Touchscreen models have their own door-thickness guidance and optional thick-door kit.

Also confirm:

  • backset and cross-bore dimensions;
  • free movement of the bolt without pushing or pulling the door;
  • clearance from the handle set and interior trim;
  • finish and exact included components;
  • keyway and physical-key plan;
  • whether the SKU is standalone, Z-Wave, Bluetooth/hub, or Matter/Thread.

Binding is not cosmetic. Baldwin notes that poor alignment can make the motor struggle and increase battery drain.

Ownership and support

Battery type and life vary by product and usage. Treat published battery duration as a model-specific estimate, not a promise. Keep a physical-entry plan and follow the exact low-battery procedure.

Do not assume a marketplace listing has current support. Baldwin’s Evolved support page says that line is discontinued. For a used, open-box, or old-stock unit, verify account-transfer requirements, app availability, firmware/support status, keys, mounting parts, and return rights before purchase.

Buying decision

Choose only after the exact product is identified. A Touchscreen Z-Wave model fits a compatible Z-Wave installation; a standalone Touchscreen fits buyers who want keypad operation without connected control; the Level-based lock follows its own platform and fit rules. A discontinued Evolved unit carries a different support risk.

No evidence reviewed here establishes that Baldwin has better locksmith access, retail support, reliability, or ownership simplicity than Schlage or another brand. Compare those factors using exact current models and local service availability.

Research limits

This is a documentation-based product-family map. We did not install, connect, security-test, battery-test, or long-term test a Baldwin lock. Current price, stock, seller, firmware support, local-code fit, and compatibility must be confirmed for the exact SKU.
