The Bosch GMS120-27 is a wall scanner, not just an unnamed “Bosch stud finder.” Its documented functions include detection of wood and steel studs, metal and live wiring, with object-center and material indications. That broader toolset can be useful for repeated wall work, but it does not certify a location as safe to drill.

This is a specification-based assessment. We have not measured detection accuracy or time savings against another scanner, and we do not claim that it prevents every missed cable, pipe or fastening mistake.

What the current model provides

Documented feature Practical question
Object-center indication and marking opening Can the result be transferred clearly to the work surface?
Multiple material indications Can you interpret the signal under the manual’s conditions?
Two included AA batteries; optional compatible 3.7V Li-ion supply Which power arrangement is included in the actual offer?
IP54 protection Does the intended environment remain within the operating instructions?

Bosch publishes model-specific scan limits and operating instructions. Check GMS120-27 rather than assuming an older GMS 120 listing is the same product.

The critical limit: detection is not identification of everything

Bosch’s guidance explains that objects other than wood can appear as non-metallic objects in wood-detection use, including some pipes or cables under certain conditions. A stud-like indication therefore needs context. Similarly, no live-wire indication does not establish that a wall contains no electrical wiring.

Wall materials, moisture, object depth and installation conditions can affect what a scanner detects. Do not treat a published maximum depth for one material as guaranteed detection of every object at that depth.

Before drilling or fastening, combine the manual’s procedure with plans, inspection and appropriate service-location methods. If concealed wiring, plumbing or gas routes remain uncertain, stop and obtain qualified help. A magnetic finder is also not a service-clearance certificate; finding a metal fastener does not prove that a neighboring drilling path is clear.

When this tool is worth considering

It is a reasonable candidate when you need its documented material indications and will learn the operating procedure. For a simple hanging job, compare the actual information required rather than deciding that a more expensive tool is automatically safer or faster.

For heavy mounts, the scanner is only one part of the work. The support, fastener choice and installation instructions still determine whether the assembly can carry its intended load. A wall scanner does not measure a shelf’s capacity; see the shelf support checks for that separate question.

Buying checks and verdict

Confirm the model, manual, power accessories, seller and return terms. Inspect a used tool for damage and verify its operation according to the manufacturer before relying on it. We have no comparative evidence supporting a claim that this model saves a fixed number of minutes or is more accurate than every magnetic or electronic alternative.

Choose it for the verified feature set and an appropriate scanning task, while retaining independent caution about hidden services. Do not buy it expecting a universal green light for drilling.
