Research scope: We checked Makita’s current XRJ01Z page and its discontinued XRJ07ZB page. We did not test cutting speed, vibration, runtime or durability.

Resolve the model-name confusion first

“Makita sub-compact reciprocating saw” often points to the black XRJ07ZB, an 18V LXT brushless model that Makita now marks discontinued. The company still lists the XRJ01Z compact 18V LXT tool-only saw. A used or remaining-stock XRJ07ZB can still be legitimate, but it needs a condition, support and price decision rather than an assumption that it is current.

The XRJ01Z is brushed, not brushless. It has a half-inch stroke, 0–3,000 strokes per minute and published capacities of two inches in wood and pipe. Makita lists 15-5/8-inch length and 3.9-pound weight with battery. The package includes one wood blade and one metal blade; battery and charger are separate.

Where the compact format helps

The short-stroke XRJ01Z suits close-quarters cuts in PVC, thin metal and small wood sections when the correct blade is used. Its dual-position paddle/trigger control can help in awkward orientations. It is not the first choice for repeated demolition in thick framing, where a longer-stroke full-size saw usually clears material faster.

Choose the blade by material and thickness, allow clearance behind the work and inspect for pipes, cables and fasteners. A compact body does not reduce the risk of cutting hidden services. Clamp small pieces and remove the battery for blade changes.

Buying an older XRJ07ZB

If considering XRJ07ZB stock, verify the exact SKU, seller return terms, serial/model label and access to model-specific parts and manuals. Do not pay a premium merely for the “sub-compact brushless” label. A current supported alternative or XRJ01Z may be easier to service, depending on the task.

Verdict and buying route

The XRJ01Z is a reasonable compact LXT saw for light, occasional close-quarters work. It gives up the brushless motor and sub-compact branding of XRJ07ZB but has a current manufacturer page and a clear tool-only identity.

Compare the current XRJ01Z listing with Makita’s discontinued XRJ07ZB record before buying.
