What Grout Refresh actually does

UltraCare Grout Refresh is a ready-to-use, water-based polymer colorant and sealer for grout joints. MAPEI says it can bond to clean cement, epoxy, urethane and acrylic grout and approves it for shower floors. It is a surface treatment for sound joints, not new grout in a bottle.

Use it to restore a consistent color or deliberately change color where the existing grout is intact. If joints are cracked, loose, powdery or missing, repair the cause and regrout instead. MAPEI’s guidance says cement grout will not simply bond over old grout; damaged joints generally require substantial removal before replacement.

Preparation makes or breaks the job

The grout must be porous and completely clean. Remove soap residue, grease, sealer contamination and cleaner residue using methods compatible with the tile and grout. Allow the surface condition required by the current technical sheet. Test in a hidden area, especially on textured, porous or natural-stone tile where stray colorant may be difficult to remove.

MAPEI recommends a small artist’s brush and a damp sponge to remove excess from tile as work progresses; a foam applicator or toothbrush can suit other joint widths. Work in manageable sections. Letting excess dry across the tile face turns a controlled joint-coloring job into a cleanup problem.

Color and shower limits

Choose from the current color chart, but do not trust a screen alone. Lighting, tile color and joint width change the perceived result. Buy enough of one color/lot for the full visible area and make a cured sample before committing.

Shower-floor approval does not mean the product repairs leaks or failed waterproofing. Movement cracks, loose tile, damp substrate and recurring efflorescence need diagnosis first. Observe the product’s cure and water-exposure times before returning a shower to service.

Verdict and buying route

Grout Refresh is useful when sound grout looks permanently stained or the color needs deliberate correction. It is poor value when the joint itself has failed.
