The Vicks VUL545 is a medium-room ultrasonic humidifier with a one-gallon tank, adjustable mist, a 180-degree nozzle, and a stated runtime of up to 36 hours. Its filter-free design saves replacement-filter cost, but does not make the unit maintenance-free.

The trade-off is in the water

Ultrasonic humidifiers project very small water droplets. Vicks explains that minerals in hard water can settle as white dust and recommends a demineralization cartridge where that occurs. Distilled water can reduce the mineral load, but it adds ongoing cost.

The VUL545 product page says to place the unit on a firm, level, water-resistant surface at least 12 inches from walls and direct mist away from furniture and bedding. Auto shutoff stops operation when empty.

Humidity and cleaning decide the result

Use a separate hygrometer rather than running continuously by feel. EPA’s mold guidance recommends keeping indoor relative humidity below 60%, ideally 30% to 50%. Condensation on windows or damp surfaces is a signal to reduce output and investigate ventilation.

Empty, dry, and clean the tank and base on the schedule in the owner instructions. Standing water and scale are reasons to service the unit, not proof that more additives are needed. Only use VapoPads or other accessories in the locations and manner Vicks specifies.

Verdict: the VUL545 is a straightforward medium-room option for owners willing to manage water quality and frequent cleaning. It is a poor fit for anyone seeking set-and-forget humidity control.
