The WAYNE CDU980E is a 3/4 HP primary sump pump with stainless motor housing, cast-iron volute, an integrated vertical float, and 1-1/2-inch NPT discharge. Its real capacity depends on lift and plumbing, not the maximum headline.

Size it from the system curve

WAYNE’s 2025 sump-pump manual lists 4,600 GPH at 10 feet of discharge head for CDU980E/CDU980ET. Add the vertical rise from pump to outlet and recognize that elbows, narrow pipe, and restrictive check valves add losses.

The CDU980E product page calls for an 11-inch-diameter or larger basin. The vertical float must travel freely without contacting the wall, pipe, cord, or debris. Test several cycles after installation.

Installation and resilience

The manual specifies 120 volts and a minimum 15-amp circuit. Follow current electrical and plumbing codes, use the required grounded protection, and do not handle energized equipment in water. Check the discharge route, freeze exposure, check valve, and termination.

This primary pump cannot run through a blackout. A high-water alarm and a properly sized backup address different failure modes. Test both on a schedule and inspect the pit for sediment.

Verdict

The CDU980E is a concrete fit when its 10-foot flow, basin geometry, 1-1/2-inch discharge, and electrical requirements match the house. Do not equate 3/4 HP with automatic protection; system design and backup determine resilience.
