Choose a driveway from comparable installed specifications, not a promise that concrete always costs less over time or asphalt is always cheaper to repair. Site preparation, water management, loads and workmanship affect both materials.

What differs

Concrete forms a rigid slab with joints and a specified curing process. Asphalt pavement uses compacted asphalt mixtures over a designed base. Each needs appropriate support and drainage; resurfacing a failing base does not correct its cause.

Quote item Why it matters
Excavation and disposal Removing failed material can be a substantial part of the job.
Subgrade and base Weak or poorly compacted support can lead to movement.
Drainage and transitions Water must not be directed into the garage or neighboring property.
Pavement specification Thickness, materials and construction details must suit the expected loads.
Edges and joints The design must address movement and edge support.
Access and return to use Follow the contractor’s documented restrictions, not a generic waiting time.

The National Asphalt Pavement Association’s contractor guidance recommends a written contract identifying thickness, site preparation, drainage, payment terms and warranty. These details make bids more useful than a single price per square foot.

For concrete, ACI explains curing as maintaining suitable moisture and temperature while the material develops its properties. Ask what curing method and protection are included rather than treating the pour as the end of the work.

Repair the cause before choosing the patch

Record cracks, settlement, standing water, edge breakup and any change in level. A surface repair may be appropriate for a limited defect; repeated movement or widespread failure can require more extensive work. Ask the contractor to distinguish cosmetic improvement from a structural or drainage repair.

Patch appearance can differ from the original surface with either material. Obtain a realistic description of color and texture matching. Do not interpret an invisible-looking repair photograph as a durability guarantee.

Compare maintenance and total cost

Request a maintenance plan for the actual pavement, climate and exposure. Include cleaning, suitable crack or joint care, any recommended coating and restrictions on de-icing products. Do not assume every asphalt driveway needs the same sealing interval or that concrete needs no upkeep.

Compare the initial bid and plausible future repair scenarios over the period you expect to own the property. Use written local prices where available; label estimates as estimates. Neither surface guarantees resale value, fewer maintenance calls or a particular lifespan.

Choose the contractor and design that address the site’s conditions clearly. Surface color and advertised convenience cannot compensate for poor drainage or inadequate preparation.
