Choose quartz for consistent color and the least upkeep: it’s nonporous, needs no sealer and cleans with soap and water, but hot pans have to go on a trivet. Choose granite if you want a one-of-a-kind natural slab and are willing to check whether it benefits from sealing. Neither is stain-proof, scratch-proof or a cutting board.
The differences that matter
| Decision | Granite | Engineered quartz |
|---|---|---|
| What it is | Quarried stone; color, veining and porosity vary by slab | Crushed mineral bound with resin and pigment; more uniform |
| Sealing | The Natural Stone Institute says most granite counters don’t need sealing, but many benefit from it | Caesarstone describes its surfaces as nonporous; no sealer is part of its care routine |
| Daily cleaning | A stone-safe, non-acidic cleaner; avoid abrasive powders | Warm water with mild detergent |
| Heat | NSI recommends trivets for hot items | Caesarstone says to always put hot cookware on trivets and hot pads |
| Chemicals to avoid | Acidic cleaners, abrasive cleaners, and rust removers that may contain hydrofluoric acid | Oven and grill cleaners, floor strippers, toilet bowl cleaners, oil soaps and tarnish removers |
| Choosing the look | Approve the actual slab, especially for islands and seams | Samples predict the finished look better, though lots can vary |

Sealing granite
The Natural Stone Institute says sealing products work as repellents. They make stone more resistant to staining, not stain-proof. If your fabricator recommends sealing a particular slab, NSI’s sealing statement favors products that resist both water- and oil-based stains and are rated for a 10- to 15-year life, rather than a routine annual reseal.
Habits for either
- Blot spills right away instead of wiping, which spreads them.
- Use coasters under glasses, especially with alcohol or citrus.
- Use a cutting board and trivets.
- Never mix ammonia and bleach. NSI warns the combination creates a toxic gas.
The quote matters as much as the material
Fabrication and installation can outweigh the material choice. Compare quotes that list slab thickness, edge profile, sink cutout and mounting, seam locations, overhang support, backsplash, tear-out of old tops, plumbing reconnection and who handles warranty claims.
