Decision focus: service and failure path
This page compares current model support, warranty, account dependence, replacement path, and what happens when the thermostat or a sensor stops working.
The current answer
Choose between exact models, not between old brand reputations. The current Nest Learning Thermostat (4th gen) includes a Nest Temperature Sensor and supports additional sensors. Ecobee’s current Premium model also includes a SmartSensor, while other ecobee models have different in-box hardware and capabilities.
That makes the old shorthand, “Nest for one room, ecobee for room sensors,” incorrect. The decision now turns on HVAC compatibility, sensor behavior, app ecosystem, accessory control, warranty, and the total hardware needed for the house.
| Decision | Current Nest path | Current ecobee path |
|---|---|---|
| Room sensing | Nest Learning Thermostat (4th gen) includes one compatible sensor; Google says it supports up to six | Smart Thermostat Premium includes one SmartSensor; support and included hardware vary by model |
| App | Google Home for the current Learning Thermostat | Ecobee app |
| Smart-home emphasis | Google Home and Matter on the current Learning Thermostat | Broad integrations, with model-specific voice and security features |
| Power | Compatibility check controls; some systems need a C wire or Nest Power Connector | Current Premium uses 24 VAC through Rc and C, with a Power Extender Kit included |
| Warranty | Check the exact Google Store model terms | Ecobee publishes a three-year limited warranty for current thermostats |
Compare the complete installed cost
Do not compare two shelf prices while ignoring missing parts. Build each quote from the exact thermostat, the number of room sensors, any trim plate, required power accessory, professional labor, and any HVAC control work.
The fourth-generation Nest Learning Thermostat includes one sensor. Ecobee Premium also includes one. A lower-tier model can still be the better value when remote sensing is unnecessary, but it is not comparable to an included-sensor package until the accessory list is normalized.
Live prices, rebates, and utility incentives change. Check the manufacturer and energy provider at purchase time rather than treating an old sale price as part of the product specification.
Repair starts with diagnosis
A blank display, short cycling, lost Wi-Fi, or incorrect temperatures do not prove the thermostat itself has failed. Power, wiring, equipment configuration, a condensate safety switch, HVAC controls, or the heating and cooling equipment can produce similar symptoms.
Before buying a replacement:
- Record the exact thermostat model and generation.
- Photograph every wire and terminal without moving conductors.
- Use the manufacturer’s compatibility checker.
- Check the HVAC equipment and accessory list, including humidifiers, dehumidifiers, ventilation, dual-fuel controls, and zoning.
- Treat exposed or uncertain wiring as a stop point for qualified HVAC or electrical service.
The cheaper repair is the correct diagnosis. Replacing a thermostat will not repair weak airflow, an equipment fault, poor duct balance, or a room exposed to unusual solar gain.
Sensor trade-offs
Remote sensors can let the control system use a different room’s temperature or combine readings according to the platform’s rules. They do not create a new HVAC zone. One system still cannot independently heat one room and cool another unless the equipment and duct design support zoning.
Compare these details before buying:
- whether a sensor is included with the exact model;
- how many sensors the thermostat supports;
- whether scheduling, occupancy, or averaging works the way the household expects;
- battery replacement and placement limits;
- distance and construction between the sensor and thermostat;
- whether the underlying comfort problem is airflow, insulation, solar gain, or equipment sizing.
Model-age risk
“Nest thermostat” covers several generations. Google ended connected support for first- and second-generation Nest Learning Thermostats in October 2025, while the current fourth-generation model uses Google Home and remains a current product. Used listings and old reviews often blur those generations.
Ecobee also sells several current models with different sensors, accessory support, voice features, and in-box parts. Read the exact product page and model label. A brand-level comparison cannot promise that every Nest or every ecobee has the same wiring, sensor, or software behavior.
Who should choose each path?
The current Nest Learning Thermostat fits a buyer who wants Google Home, Matter support, a sensor included, and compatibility with the documented HVAC setup. Ecobee Premium fits a buyer who wants its included SmartSensor, ecobee’s integrations, and its documented accessory and security features.
Choose a lower-cost model from either family when its exact compatibility and feature set cover the job. Skip both smart platforms when a basic programmable thermostat meets the schedule and remote access is not useful.
Buying checklist
- Exact model and generation recorded
- HVAC voltage and system type supported
- Required C wire or power accessory confirmed
- Connected accessories and zoning checked
- Included sensor count verified
- Additional sensor cost and placement planned
- App and account requirements accepted
- Warranty and installer requirements read
- Utility rebate checked at purchase time
- Existing wall damage and trim plate considered
For routine system upkeep after installation, keep the HVAC air filter sized and changed on schedule; a thermostat cannot compensate for restricted airflow.

FAQ
Does Nest support room sensors now?
Yes. Google includes one second-generation sensor with the fourth-generation Nest Learning Thermostat and supports additional sensors. Verify compatibility for older Nest generations separately.
Does every ecobee include a SmartSensor?
No. Included hardware varies by model. The current Premium includes one; compare the current model table before pricing a complete system.
Which thermostat is cheaper to repair?
No brand is universally cheaper. Diagnose power, wiring, controls, accessories, and HVAC equipment before replacing the wall unit, then check the exact warranty.
Which is better for hot and cold rooms?
Both current premium paths support remote sensing. Neither sensor fixes duct, insulation, solar-gain, zoning, or equipment-sizing problems by itself.
