For a few small anchors, a percussion hammer drill may be enough. For repeated holes, larger diameters, or hard concrete, an SDS-Plus rotary hammer is usually the more suitable tool class. Start with the anchor instructions and the structure, not a generic torque ranking.

Check the model identity before buying: DEWALT documents the DCH273B as a 1-inch rotary hammer, not a 1-1/4-inch tool, and PORTER-CABLE identifies the PCC670B as a reciprocating saw, not a rotary hammer.

One verified rotary-hammer example

DEWALT identifies the DCH273B as a 20V MAX XR brushless 1-inch SDS-Plus L-shape rotary hammer with 2.1 joules of impact energy and drill, hammer-drill, and chipping modes. It is sold as a bare tool and uses SDS-Plus accessories.

That makes it a documented example for repeated concrete work, not an automatic choice for every homeowner. Battery, charger, bit, dust extraction, anchor system, hole diameter, depth and overhead use all change the total setup.

We have not drilled concrete with this model or compared its speed, vibration, runtime or durability. The Amazon button is an exact-model search; confirm the model and included items before buying.

Match the tool to the anchor

Read the anchor manufacturer’s installation instructions first. They define the permitted base material, bit diameter, hole depth, cleaning method, spacing, edge distance, fixture thickness and tightening procedure. A powerful tool cannot make an unsuitable anchor safe.

Use the exact bit system the tool accepts. SDS-Plus bits do not mount like ordinary round-shank bits. Replace worn bits that no longer hold the specified diameter, and do not improvise between incompatible shanks or chucks.

Check the wall before drilling

Concrete and masonry can conceal electrical conductors, plumbing, gas lines, reinforcement and post-tensioning. Stop if the wall construction or service route is unknown. Do not drill into a post-tensioned slab or structural member without an approved plan.

Silica dust is a serious hazard. Use the dust-control method required for the material, tool and workplace, and follow the tool, accessory and respiratory-protection instructions. A household vacuum attached informally is not proof of compliant dust control.

Wear eye and hearing protection and control the work area. Keep two hands on a rotary hammer, use the side handle, and remove the battery before changing accessories. Overhead drilling adds falling-dust and balance hazards.

Buying checklist

  • Anchor type, diameter, embedment and manufacturer instructions
  • Base material: concrete, concrete block, brick or another masonry product
  • Number and depth of holes
  • SDS-Plus bit availability
  • Battery and charger compatibility
  • Dust extraction and cleanup plan
  • Hidden-service and reinforcement assessment
  • Tool weight and safe two-handed control

Renting can be the better choice for one repair because it provides the right tool class without adding a battery platform and long-term storage burden.
