A refrigerator door-seal gap can come from a dirty or damaged gasket, but also from an obstructing shelf, overloaded door bin or alignment problem. Check what prevents contact before ordering a seal. A new gasket cannot correct an item physically holding the door open.

Start with the closed-door fit

With the appliance stable and the surrounding area clear, look for containers, drawers or racks projecting into the door’s path. Close the door normally without slamming it. Compare the gap at the top, sides and bottom, and note whether a particular loaded bin or drawer changes the fit.

Do not lift or twist a heavy door to force it into position. Follow the model instructions for leveling and alignment or arrange service; moving a refrigerator can strain a water line or make an unstable appliance dangerous.

Clean before condemning the gasket

Whirlpool recommends mild detergent and warm water for gasket cleaning, followed by rinsing and drying. Avoid abrasive cleaners or products the manufacturer prohibits. Clean folds gently without pulling the gasket out of its retaining channel.

Inspect for splits, hardened sections or a part pulled loose. Do not use a heat gun, boiling water or an improvised lubricant to reshape the seal. A repair that seems to close the gap briefly may damage the material or conceal the actual alignment fault.

Sort the observations

Finding More useful than immediately ordering a seal
Sticky residue but no visible damage Clean by the model instructions, then recheck normal closure
One loose or torn section Check the exact gasket part and retention method
Door appears uneven or rubs Investigate alignment, loading and support
Door closes but cooling remains poor Treat temperature performance as a separate service issue

A paper-strip resistance check can show differences in contact, but it does not measure refrigeration performance or prove an airtight seal. Do not ignore abnormal interior temperatures because one section grips paper.

Before buying or calling for service

Record the full model number, affected edge and whether the problem started after moving the appliance or changing its loading. Include photos taken with the door at rest. Ask whether the proposed work addresses the seal itself or the support and hinge arrangement.

For a separate water-flow problem, see refrigerator dispenser troubleshooting . Do not combine unrelated symptoms into a single assumed gasket diagnosis.
