The InSinkErator Badger 5 is a basic 1/2 HP continuous-feed garbage disposal that’s 11-1/2 inches tall, mounts with InSinkErator’s Quick Lock system and has a dishwasher inlet. It’s a sensible replacement when you’re swapping out an existing Quick Lock-mounted disposal and the new unit’s height still lines up with your drain. It’s sold with or without a factory-installed power cord, so check which package you’re buying.

Measure before buying
- Mount: check whether your sink already has an InSinkErator Quick Lock mount. If it has a different mounting system, plan to install the mount that comes with the Badger 5.
- Height and drain: measure from the bottom of the sink to the trap arm. An 11-1/2-inch body with a lower outlet than your old unit may mean resetting the trap.
- Dishwasher: if a dishwasher drains through the disposal, knock out the inlet plug before connecting the hose, as the instructions direct. If no dishwasher is connected, leave the plug in.
- Power: a corded unit needs a switched receptacle under the sink. A cordless unit gets wired directly or fitted with a cord kit, per the installation guide and local code.
- Access: leave room under the sink to reach the manual reset button.
Use and jams
Continuous feed means the disposal runs with the opening uncovered, so keep hands and utensils out. Follow the manual’s instructions on water flow and what you can grind, and keep nonfood items out of it. If it hums or stops, turn the switch off and disconnect power before you look inside. Clear the jam with the tool the manual specifies, never by reaching into the chamber, then press the reset button. If it keeps tripping, leaks from the body or won’t turn at all, the unit needs service or replacement rather than repeated resets.
Verdict
The Badger 5 is a straightforward replacement when the mount, drain height, dishwasher hookup and power supply all line up. Buy it for that fit, not for its horsepower.
