Verdict

The Kobalt 81704 is a 1/2-inch drive click torque wrench documented for 50–250 ft-lb. It suits fasteners whose specified final torque falls comfortably inside that range. It is wrong for small or delicate fasteners that require lower values or inch-pounds.

Lowe’s lists a locking mechanism, click and handle pulse, reversible ratcheting head, knurled handle, ASME compliance, and a one-year limited guarantee. Those facts apply to 81704, not every Kobalt torque tool.

Correct use

Find the fastener manufacturer’s torque and sequence. Use clean, correct sockets and follow the service information on dry versus lubricated threads. Extensions that change effective lever length can change applied torque; follow the manual’s calculation.

Pull smoothly at the intended grip point and stop at the first clear click. Do not keep pulling to “make sure,” and use another tool to break fasteners loose. Store the wrench dry and protected as its instructions direct. Drops, overload, or suspect readings justify calibration inspection.
