Research scope: We used Milwaukee’s current 2904-20 bare-tool and 2904-22 kit pages. We did not independently test torque, speed, AutoStop response or runtime.

Exact model and package

The 2904-20 is Milwaukee’s current M18 Fuel half-inch hammer drill/driver sold as a bare tool. Milwaukee publishes 1,400 inch-pounds, up to 2,100 rpm and 33,000 blows per minute. The box includes the drill, side handle and belt clip, not a battery, charger or case.

The 2904-22 kit is the same drill packaged with two XC5.0 batteries, charger and case. Compare complete cost rather than confusing a bare-tool price with a ready-to-work kit. Milwaukee identifies older 2604-20 as replaced by 2904-20.

Power brings reaction risk

This is a high-torque drill for large wood boring, metal drilling, fasteners and intermittent holes in brick, block or concrete with the correct bit and hammer mode. Use the supplied side handle for demanding work and brace for a bind. AutoStop is designed to limit over-rotation during a bind-up, but it does not replace grip, stance or correct speed.

Select low gear for large self-feed, auger and hole-saw work within the manual’s limits. High gear suits smaller drilling. The 1,400-in-lb headline is a maximum rating, not a fastener setting; use the clutch for appropriate driving and a calibrated torque tool where the fastener specification requires one.

When it is too much drill

At 6.9 inches long and 3.3 pounds without battery, the body is compact for its class, yet an XC battery and side handle make the working setup substantial. A lighter drill/driver is easier for cabinets, furniture and routine pilot holes. A rotary hammer is more efficient for repeated or larger concrete drilling.

Remove the battery for bit changes, wear task-appropriate protection and control silica dust when drilling masonry.

Verdict and buying route

The 2904-20 makes sense for an M18 owner who regularly needs large-hole and masonry capability. Occasional light-duty users will get better handling and value from a smaller drill.

Confirm the 2904-20 bare-tool contents against the 2904-22 kit before buying.
