The STIHL MSE 170 C-B serves a narrow but useful job: repeated cutting within extension-cord reach, without gasoline storage or battery charging. STIHL’s U.S. catalog lists it as a 120-volt corded model with an 8.4-pound powerhead and a 12-to-16-inch guide-bar range. We did not test it.

The cord is the main buying test

A corded motor can keep working as long as the branch pile and operator do, but only when the circuit and extension cord meet the manual. Long or undersized cords cause voltage drop and heat. Plan the route so the cord stays behind the cut and away from water, traffic, and the falling workpiece.

That makes the MSE 170 C-B a better fit for ground-level outdoor work near a suitable outdoor supply than a distant woodpile. It is not a workshop-indoor cutting tool. If the intended work moves around the property, compare the battery MSA line instead.

Useful hardware, familiar maintenance

The C-B designation brings STIHL’s Quick Chain Adjuster and quick chain-brake system. It removes fuel mixing, spark-plug service, and carburetor storage concerns. It does not remove bar-oil filling, chain sharpening, tension checks, sprocket inspection, or chip cleanup.

Use the exact bar-and-chain combination specified for the saw. The STIHL MSE 170 C-B/MSE 210 C-B manual also governs extension-cord sizing, electrical protection, transport, and maintenance. The STIHL chainsaw buying guide helps separate corded, battery, and gasoline use cases.

Cutting limits that do not change with the motor

Keep both hands on the saw, stand on stable ground, and stay out of the bar’s kickback path. Wear the protective equipment specified by STIHL, including eye, hearing, head, hand, leg, and foot protection appropriate to the task. Do not work from a ladder or above shoulder height.

Storm-damaged and bent limbs can be under severe compression or tension and move suddenly when cut. Leave overhead, hung, split, or tension-loaded work to a trained professional. Disconnect the plug before clearing, adjusting, or transporting the saw.

Verdict

Buy the MSE 170 C-B when the work is genuinely close to reliable 120-volt power and avoiding fuel or batteries is worth managing a cord. For roaming storm cleanup or remote firewood, its defining advantage becomes its defining constraint.
