The STIHL MS 251 WOOD BOSS is not shorthand for every saw bearing “251.” STIHL also sells the MS 251 C-BE, which adds Easy2Start and a toolless Quick Chain Adjuster. Both use a 45.6 cc engine, but the controls, weight, and purchase price differ.

STIHL’s catalog lists the MS 251 WOOD BOSS at 3.0 bhp and about 11 pounds for the powerhead, with 16-to-18-inch bar options. The current MS 251 product page identifies an 18-inch .325-inch configuration.
The MS 251 C-BE page describes the added starting and chain-adjustment systems. Those are convenience features, not more engine output. A listing that drops the C-BE suffix can lead to the wrong expectation.
Buyer fit
The MS 251 is aimed at seasonal cleanup and routine property maintenance. It makes more sense for recurring firewood and larger fallen limbs than for two pruning cuts a year. The cost extends beyond the saw: gasoline/oil mix, bar oil, chain files or sharpening service, spare chain, protective equipment, and dry storage all belong in the budget.
Maintenance and risk
Follow the MS 251 instruction manual for fuel, starting, chain tension, brake checks, air-filter care, and transport. Do not treat a chain brake or low-kickback chain as permission to cut without training.
Verdict: choose the standard MS 251 WOOD BOSS for its conventional controls and dealer-supported homeowner-saw role. Pay for the C-BE only if its easier-start and toolless-adjustment features solve a real handling need.
