The current U.S. STIHL MS 250 is a gasoline homeowner saw built around a 45.4 cc engine. STIHL lists the current 18-inch configuration with a .325-inch-pitch, .050-inch-gauge chain and 68 drive links. This is a document-based review, not a cutting test.
What the specification means
An 18-inch bar does not make every 18-inch log an appropriate beginner cut. Wood condition, tension, support, kickback zone, operator training, and chain sharpness determine whether the job is controlled. The MS 250’s side-access tensioner and automatic oiler simplify routine adjustment, but they do not automate inspection.
Confirm the exact configuration on STIHL’s MS 250 product page because older used examples and replacement bars may differ.
Fuel and storage are part of the purchase
The saw needs the specified gasoline/oil mixture and fresh fuel. STIHL’s chainsaw FAQ says its products are designed for gasoline containing no more than 10% ethanol and advises against storing mixed fuel for long periods. Budget for approved fuel containers, two-stroke oil, bar oil, files or professional sharpening, and seasonal storage work.
Safety and service
Read the MS 250 instruction manual before starting. A chain brake reduces risk in specified events; it cannot make an unsafe cut safe. Use the manual’s protective equipment and handling rules, and obtain instruction if felling, storm-loaded wood, or overhead hazards are involved.
Verdict: the MS 250 fits recurring property cleanup for an owner prepared to maintain a gasoline saw. Buyers who cut only a few small branches may get a simpler ownership path from a battery model.
