A useful TOTO toilet review cannot assign one reliability score to dozens of different mechanisms. The purchase turns on an exact bowl, tank, flush volume, rough-in, and seat configuration.
Start with the drain location
Measure from the finished wall, not the baseboard, to the flange-bolt center. TOTO sells 10-, 12-, and in some families adaptable rough-in configurations. The specification drawing also reveals wall clearance, supply position, and bowl height. A wrong rough-in is not a cosmetic mismatch.
Decode the package
Two-piece TOTO models commonly combine separate bowl and tank codes. For example, the current Drake CST776CSFG uses bowl C776CEFG and tank ST776SA, while its seat and supply line are separate. Other models may bundle a seat or WASHLET. Match every component and finish suffix before checkout.
Flush volume is also exact-model information. EPA’s WaterSense toilet guidance covers labeled high-efficiency toilets, but a TOTO badge alone does not establish certification. Use the WaterSense product search and TOTO’s current sheet for the precise code.
Serviceability over slogans
TOTO publishes model-specific parts diagrams that identify fill valves, flush valves, seals, levers, and tank hardware. Check that document before buying; it gives a concrete view of future maintenance. It does not prove how long any individual installation will run without service.
Installation cost rises when the shutoff leaks, flange is damaged, floor is uneven, supply location conflicts with a skirted bowl, or a heavy one-piece unit needs two people. Price those conditions rather than relying on a national average.
Verdict
TOTO offers well-documented choices, but buy the model code, not the brand reputation. The separate Drake review on this site covers CST776CSFG specifically; this page is for choosing among TOTO layouts and configurations.
